Tiger Returns – What Should We Expect?
While most of the meaningful golf has already been played for the year, there is a huge story in the world of golf unfolding this week in the beautiful Bahamas – Tiger Woods is returning to competition. Taking part in the 18-man field that makes up the Hero World Challenge, Woods is coming back to competition after a layoff of more than a year. It goes without saying that this qualifies as huge news in the world of golf, as Woods is a 14-time major champion and ranks as one of the very best players in the history of the game.
Of course, injuries have taken their toll on Woods in recent years, as he has been unable to compete on a regular basis. When he has competed, Tiger has been largely unable to find the form that marked his legendary career, as it has now been more than eight years since his last major championship win. However, he did have a five-win season on the PGA Tour in 2013, so it has not been all that long since he was playing at an elite level.
Still a Legend
So, what to expect from Woods when he puts the ball back in the air this week? It’s hard to say. On one hand, this is still Tiger Woods. Despite the injuries that have set him back, he remains just 40 years old, which is a long way from the finish line for many golf careers. Given good health, it seems almost certain that Woods would return to somewhere near the top of the game. Even if his dominant days are a thing of the past, there is too much talent and experience within Tiger Woods to be stuck near the bottom of the leaderboard for long.
Durability is the Question
It is the injury concern, of course, that will be the point to watch as he works toward regaining his past form. There is no one in the world that could possibly doubt his talent, but it is fair to wonder at this point if his body will be able to hold up to the rigors of professional golf. Although golf is not a physical game like football or basketball, playing at a high level does wear on the body, especially when playing rounds on consecutive days as is required on Tour. If Tiger can shake loose of the injury problems that have been following him around in recent years, it will be exciting to see what kind of golf he is still capable of producing.
No matter what you expect to see from Tiger Woods during his return to competition, one thing is sure – golf is better for his presence. As one of the most-talented and most-exciting players in history, any tournament which includes Tiger Woods is one that is worth watching.
