Jordan Spieth is Back – Did He Ever Leave?

Jordan Spieth

As far as golf careers go, Jordan Spieth is doing pretty well so far. Despite still waiting on his 24th birthday, Spieth has already posted nine career PGA Tour wins – including his latest, a victory in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Of course, there are two major titles included in those nine wins, along with a Tour Championship. By any measure, Jordan Spieth is on track to go down as one of the greatest players in golf history.

So, with so many incredibly accomplishments at such a young age, how is it that so many golf fans can be ‘down’ on Spieth? Ever since his famous meltdown at the Masters last spring, it seems as though many have written off Spieth as a player who had one great year (in 2015). He has not claimed a major title since the back-to-back wins at the Masters and U.S. Open in 2015, something that can hardly be called a crime. He followed up a five-win season in 2015 with another two wins in 2016, and now he has one early in 2017.

Still One of the Best

Obviously, any rational observer would determine that there is nothing at all wrong with Jordan Spieth’s golf game. If he were to continue on this pace for the rest of his career, he would be one of the most-decorated players of all-time, with several majors and countless other titles to his credit. Oh, and by the way, he’s making a few dollars for his efforts as well.

Any sense that Spieth has trailed off can only be attributed to what is commonly known as the Tiger effect. Every top young player is inevitably compared to Tiger Woods, which is both ridiculous and unfair. Depending on your perspective, Tiger Woods may be the greatest golfer of all-time. Even if you give that title to Mr. Nicklaus, Woods is clearly one of the top two. Comparing any young player to that standard is just foolish – and it only leads to a sense of disappointment where none should exist.

Here to Stay

Jordan Spieth is not ‘back’ after his victory at Pebble Beach, because he never went anywhere in the first place. He has been one of the top players in the world for a few years now, despite his young age. Given the long careers often enjoyed by top golfers, it is likely that we will see Spieth contending for important titles for many years to come.
